Welcome to Antioquia, the home base of Paisa culture.
Paisas are often known for their distinct uniforms — often including a poncho, a carriel satchel, and a wide–brimmed aguadeño hat. In fact, in this video I was able to explore a few pieces of this paisa uniform, but you’ll just have to watch and see!
But paisas are also known for their delicious coffee, colorful architecture, and extraordinary hospitality. It’s one of the most visited regions of the country for a reason, with millions of tourists flocking to it’s capital city every year to experience it’s friendly locals and year-round good weather.
But on my journey through Antioquia, I hoped to explore beyond Medellín, into the pueblitos paisas that truly define the region. In many ways, this department was built on the stories of the carrieles — muleteers who traveled from the high Andes to settle in the region, transporting crops, goods, and belongings on the backs of their mules. This history still very much defines the paisa identity to this day, especially in the pueblos, where’s it’s not uncommon to see carrieles transporting goods through town!
But there’s a lot more to Antioquia than just Paisa culture. I had the chance to explore some of it in this video, but I’ll also be working on some videos about specific towns and regions in Antioquia (since Medellín is my home base after all!) So stay tuned!
