They call the department of Meta the “gateway to the plains,” and from the very moment I arrived I could see why.
One moment, I was winding down the Andes mountains from Bogotá, the next, the land stretched out in front of me as far as the eye can see. One of my friends in the region described it as a “sea of land,” and I can’t help but agree!
But this was just the beginning of my time in the llanos orientales. During my time spend in the region, I had the opportunity to dive into Colombian cowboy culture — from joropo music to carne llanera of course! I even had the opportunity to attend las cuadrillas, one of the oldest events in Colombia and a true hallmark of llanero culture.
I’d say this department definitely made a mark on me… in more ways than one! You’ll just have to watch the video to find out how!
