It’s Carnival Season, and there’s no better place to celebrate in Colombia than the city of Barranquilla — the capitol of the department of Atlántico and the biggest Carnival in Colombia!
I was able to visit Barranquilla Carnival 2024 as part of my 32 Departments of Colombia series and after many nights of aguardiente-fueled dancing in the street and salchipapa of epic proportions, I can easily say it’s one of my favorite experiences in Colombia to date. I even got to be a part of La Batalla de Flores — the most emblematic parade of Carnival — but you’ll just have to watch the video to find out how!
Besides Carnival, Atlántico is a department that exemplifies life on the Colombian coast, from endless fried food to rumba all night long. It’s a department filled with stories, from afrocolombian histories to indigenous legends, but united by a sense of joy and pride that can be felt in every interaction with los costeños.
So grab your aguardiente, don some sequins, and get ready for Carnival 2024, Barranquilla style!
