I sound like a broken record but I’ll say it again: Córdoba might just be the most surprising department I’ve yet to visit in my 32 departments of Colombia series.
Admittedly, it wasn’t even part of my plan at the time to visit Córdoba, but having previously been in the department of Sucre for the Fiestas de 20 de Enero, I figured why not continue driving down the coast and add Córdoba to my intinerary? A random friend made through TikTok confirmed my plans, and before I knew it I was in Cordoba’s capital city of Montería.
And I LOVED it. From the fandango to the fritos to the walk along the Río Sinú, the brutal coastal heat was the only thing that kept me from staying indefinitely. A last minute trip turned into a weeks-long stay where I traveled all around the area — and milked a buffalo along the way. But hey, what better way to celebrate being in the agriculture department of the country?
Besides, there’s a lot more to this department than agriculture — we’re talking Arab food, colorful picos, fandango dancing, and so much more. But hey, you’ll have to watch the video to find out!
