Welcome to Colombia’s smallest department, the islands of San Andres, Providencia, and Santa Catalina! This is perhaps the most unique department I’ve visited on my 32 Departments of Colombia series.
Despite their small size, these islands are home to a whole lot of history. San Andres has certainly gained a reputation in recent years as a beach-goers hotspot, but beyond the seaside resorts the island is rich in it’s own unique culture — a mix of traditions from around the world all topped off with reggae music and stunning coastlines. Add a strong coco loco to the mix and you’ve got the epitome of island life at your fingertips.
The nearby, smaller islands of Providencia and Santa Catalina have a more laid back feel, unified by a deep sense of community and cultural identity. The island was nearly destroyed following Hurricane Iota in 2022, but the community rallied together and has continued to build the island up from the ground following the destruction. The deep passion for the island home could be felt from the moment I stepped on the island.
So mix yourself up a cocktail (preferably coconut-based) and enjoy this island-edition! Which department should I visit next?
