Bogotá: Colombia’s Misunderstood Capital City

Welcome to the Colombian capital, the cold, gritty city of Bogotá.

Setting out on the road again to keep exploring all 32 Departments of Colombia, Bogotá kept coming back to me. Sure, there’s its central location and sheer size, but it’s also where all the stories of Colombia converge in one. So what better place to begin again than in a city where every piece of Colombia comes together?

Sure, travelers and locals alike have strong opinions about Bogotá — I’ve heard everything from cold to unfriendly to overwhelming. To their credit, at 3,000 meters of altitude the city is certainly chilly, but beyond it’s gritty facade is a city steeped in history. It didn’t take me long once I arrived in town to start learning the stories of the Muisca — the pre-Columbian people who called this land home, or the cachacos — the high-society folks you’ll still find tucked away in hidden bars and bookstores.

So is Bogotá misunderstood? I would argue yes, but you’ll just have to watch the video to find out why! It feels so good to be back on the road, so here’s to many more departments of Colombia to come!
