Caldas: The Heart and Soul of Colombian Coffee Country

The Colombian Coffee Region is home to some of the oldest coffee-growing traditions in the world. There’s a reason people rave about cafe colombiano, where each cup is prepared with a deep knowledge of the soil, the seasons, and the methods needed to extract the most flavor from every sip.

Many of these methods were born here in the department of Caldas, where coffee production runs through everything. From colorful towns built into the mountains to cities specializing in cafe culture, it feels like everything in this department centers around the perfect cup of coffee. There’s a deep connection to the land here that can be felt — and tasted! — in every cup of coffee.

I lived in the eje cafetero a few years ago, in the nearby department of Quindรญo, but coming back to this region felt like experiencing it with new eyes. From exploring the sombrero-weaving traditions of Aguadas to the hot springs of Los Nevados to my motorcycle breaking down in the middle of coffee country, Caldas was full of stories I never expected. I hope you enjoy exploring it along with me in this video!
