Quindío: Exploring Colombia’s Coffee Region – 2/32

Welcome to my home department, the Department of Quindío! I’m so excited to finally share my home as part of my 32 Departments of Colombia series.

Quindío is the heart and soul of Colombia’s coffee-growing region, and while I may be biased, has the best coffee in the country. It’s also one of the most highly visited regions of Colombia due to it’s unique natural features — perhaps most notable being Colombia’s national “palmas de cera,” or wax palms, the tallest palm trees in the world. The town of Salento has become a backpacker hotspot in recent years and is even said to have inspired some of Disney’s movie “Encanto.”

But Quindío is home to plenty more than the Valle de Cocora. It’s capital city of Armenia is on the rise as one of the safest cities in the country and the nearby natural parks are a bird-watchers dream. Plus, you’ll never have to drink a bad cup of coffee living in the eje cafetero.

So grab a cup of joe and enjoy episode two! Which department should I visit next?
